FAQ

What is Guplu.com?

Guplu.com is a site for Indians to get local and relevant answers to their questions. As more and more Indians are settling aboard, they need help from their local Indian community in getting specific answers. Learn more.

What is kind of questions can I ask?

You can - ask about almost anything that you need help with. Topics like -

  • Moving to / settling in a new city
  • Help with local laws, tax, regulations and legal issues
  • Recommendations for local agents, attorneys, etc
  • Looking for local Indian associations, temples, events
  • Question about traveling locally, etc
  • and much more ...

You can't - ask about questions that don't help you and diminishes the value of this site. To prevent your question from being flagged and possibly removed/deleted, avoid asking subjective questions where -

  • every answer is equally valid: "What's your favorite ______?"
  • your answer is provided along with the question, and you expect more answers: "I liked ______ movie. What about you?"
  • we are being asked an open-ended, hypothetical question: "What if ______ happened?"
  • it is a rant disguised as a question: "______ sucks, am I right?"
  • unsolicited marketing, advertising or spamming of products/services: "Looking for cheap ______?"

In short, ask questions that are real, specific, relevant to others, on-topic and in your location.

Why does this site look so different?

True, where older Q&A sites are controlled by assigned moderators we really like the idea that the most prominent users, who gained karma (reputation) by contributing valuable content, can have certain privileges to keep this site clean. In other words, this site is run by you.

Karma (Reputation)?

For basic use of our forum, you do not need any karma (reputation), asking questions, answering questions and simply viewing questions can be done by everyone. If you want to help run the site, you need karma. The more karma you gain by contributing, the more you can change and adjust content.

Karma can be gained by posting good questions and useful answers. Your peers will vote on your posts, and those votes will cause you to gain or lose karma points. For every upvote on your posts, you gain 15 reputation points. But if you ask off topic questions or answers then you might be voted down and this means you lose 2 karma points. You can only earn 300 karma points a day.

These are the minimum amounts of karma points you need to obtain certain priviliges:

0Vote up
15 Flag offensive
0Leave comments
15Vote down, (costs 1 rep)
0 Vote to close or reopen your questions, create new tags
150Retag questions
200Edit Community Wiki Questions
400Edit other people's posts
600Vote to close or reopen any questions
400Delete Comments
10000Delete questions, answers and other management functions

After earning enough karma you will become as influential to the community as a moderator, and the community is run by the members instead of an assigned moderator, which is much more democratic!

Etiquette

Civility is required at all times; rudeness will not be tolerated.

Be nice.
Treat others with the same respect you'd want them to treat you. We're all here to learn together. Be tolerant of others who may not know everything you know. Bring your sense of humor.

Be honest.
Above all, be honest. If you see misinformation, vote it down. Add comments indicating what, specifically, is wrong. Provide better answers of your own. Best of all -- edit and improve the existing questions and answers!

Can I promote products or websites I am affiliated with here?

Be careful, because the community frowns on overt self-promotion and tends to vote it down and flag it as spam. Post good, relevant answers, and if some (but not all) happen to be about your product or website, so be it. However, you must disclose your affiliation in your answers.
